Above, circa 1925 postcard of the Stadium
for the House of David traveling
baseball team from Benton Harbor,
Michigan. People came for miles to see
those "Long Haired and Bearded" boys
play in the stadium which was built in
1911. The House of David barnstormed
from 1930 to 1940, then again from 1946
to 1955, playing against Major, Minor,
Independent and Negro league teams.
Satchel Paige, Babe Didrikson, Jackie
Mitchell, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig at
one time barnstormed with the House of
David team. The men donned fake beards.
Grover Cleveland Alexander was a player
manager in the early 1930s.
The community printed its own postcards, with the sales of the postcards
helping to fund the entertainment park. Real photo
postcards Were also used to produce
House of David postcards. Most RPPCs
are dated to the AZO, 1918-1930, and
1926-1943 formats, but they were also
produced using the Kodak paper, 1950
and later format. No postcards were
produced during the war years
(1941-1945) The back of the RPPCs read:
"Eden Springs, Israelite House Of
DaviD, Benton Harbor, Mich. U.S.A.,
Send for Literature."
